Breast augmentation and other plastic surgery procedures gaining popularity
with the 65 and older age group.
There are statistics showing the number of cosmetic surgery patients has grown
more than 352% in the past five years in the 65 years and older age group
according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. ABC reported on
one 80-year old woman who went in for a breast augmentation, face-lift, eyelift,
lip enlargement, and chemical peel. While the surgeon who performed the plastic
surgery procedure on the woman has never performed a breast augmentation on
someone at that age, it is believed that this trend will continue in the future.
But conducting plastic surgery on older patients must be conducted with
precaution. Many patients that are over 65 have medical problems, including high
blood pressure and coronary artery diseases that younger patients do not have.
It is extremely important to consider the patient’s risk for complication, and
some plastic surgeons feel that it should only be performed in patients with low
risk because it is an elective surgical decision. A University of Illinois
College of Medicine doctor, Dr. J. Regan Thomas feels that “there may be greater
likelihood that patients in older age groups may have systemic illnesses or
conditions that put them at greater risk from surgery, such as diabetes or
hypertension.” Older patients take longer to heal and have a decreased result
satisfaction because their skin lacks elasticity that is used to recover from
surgery quickly. The importance of having a board certified plastic surgeon with
older generations becomes vital to the safety and well being of the patient.

Breast augmentation procedures are increasing.
Breast augmentation has increased by 476% since 1992, the largest increase in
plastic surgery procedures. The acceptance people have towards plastic surgery
and breast augmentation has shifted over the years as more and more people
describe desiring plastic surgery procedures in order to feel young inside and
outside. Even as the economy was suffering, plastic surgery remained high. The
72 million baby boomers are seeking plastic surgery at the rate of 1 million
procedures per year and this trend does not appear to be slowing down anytime
soon. (CBS News, 6-1-01)
Teenagers are opting for plastic surgery.
The amount of plastic surgery procedures performed on teenagers is increasing,
and the number of breast augmentations performed on teenagers has quadrupled in
the past five years. Some experts feel the shift in younger generations is due
to the views that anything that does not appear perfect is a deformity. Because
plastic surgery can have a very emotional and psychological effect on an
individual, especially those thinking they can achieve perfection, it is not
advised for younger, more easily impressionable individuals to undergo plastic
surgery until they are older and sure of their decision. (CBS News, 6-22-00)
FDA gives approval to saline breast implants.
The FDA approved the use of saline breast implants in May 2000 while noting the
relatively high complication and failure rates associated with this type of
breast augmentation. Information indicating the possibility of multiple breast
augmentation surgeries after the initial implants are put in. (CNN.Com, 5-11-00)
