Ultrasound of the breast is often recommended to evaluate breast lumps felt
by a woman or her healthcare provider; it is also used to evaluate breast masses
seen on a mammogram. Many of these lumps can be diagnosed as simple fluid filled
breast cysts. Lumps which are not cysts are usually solid masses and the
ultrasound characteristics help determine the need for biopsy.
Ultrasound is used as a diagnostic test only; is not generally used as a
screening test. It is not a substitute or a replacement for regular mammography
and breast examination. Ultrasound uses sound waves, not X-rays to create
images. There are no known risks associated with its use.
