MUST THERE BE A BATTLE?
Healthcare today is at a crossroads. The medical practitioner of today faces a
changing environment in the management of patient’s health. Consumers today have
more information than ever before about many different aspects of health and
medicine. Practitioners now have to take their patients through an educational
process. It is up to the professional to help put all of this information into a
perspective and context that will be useful for their treatment.
There is a tendency for patients to want to define the type of “doctor” they
see. It is counterproductive to label ourselves. The point is patients should be
provided with every option for treatment. The patient can then make an informed
and intelligent decision. I am frequently questioned by patient’s who want to
know if I believe in natural medicine. Natural or not, I believe the best way to
medically treat a patient would include a variety of methods. Many times,
preventative measures and methods compliment main stream medical treatments.
In order to provide the best medical care for a patient; there must be an
integrative approach to treatment. In effect, medicine in its diversity has
segregated physicians to their own particular area of expertise. The human body
is a complex creature existing in a network of systems and organs. When treating
one aspect of the body, many times other areas of the body are affected.
Diagnosis and treatment needs to heed this physiological fact and incorporate
this into the plan of treatment. Simply, the Specialties in medicine today need
to cross-over each other.
